Creatures of Comfort

The residents of the Astute Animals Sanctuary are known for their unusual attentiveness, each drawn to pursuits that seem thoughtfully—and sometimes improbably—matched to them. How these inclinations came to be is unclear, but they suggest minds at work and lives shaped by more than instinct.

The Portraits

Bartholomew The Photographer

Bartholomew is a gentle mole who has spent a lifetime documenting the world he cannot see through the hum of his beloved antique camera. Though blind, he believes every click of the shutter captures the feeling of a moment, and his photographs, mysteriously beautiful, are treasured by all the hotel guests.

Filomena Likes Strawberries

Filomena is known throughout the hotel for her peculiar habit of organizing strawberries into mysterious formations that no one, not even the staff, can decipher. Vera argues this is simply high art and has taken to interpreting Filomena’s berry arrangements as fortunes with surprising accuracy.
